Even a very old generation diesel will start without problems in winter
provided:
1) glow plugs are in good condition
2) proper winter fuel is used
The latter has been greatly reduced with use of electrically heated fuel
filters, but I still would make sure to use winter fuel just to be on the
safe side. Should winter fuel be not available, you can substitute with
proper fuel additive. My mother used to drive an '81 Datsun diesel which,
like most Japanese cars of this vintage, was being eaten alive by rust, but
mechanicals were in superb condition. With a small bottle of fuel additive
in every tank, it was starting at the first try even in -25C weather.
