That's a leak there, and can certainly cause the problem you describe.
This leak would allow unmetered air to enter the engine, and cause
insufficient fuel to be injected into the intake, causing the cutout
you experienced.  Try sealing that crack somehow for now (duct tape,
silicone sealant, whatever), and find yourself a replacement air boot.
