Re: plastic fabrication

Ron-
Yes, it's entirely possible to build a cold air intake for the 5kt engine...
no plastic-forming skill required. The pieces are as close as your local
garden-variety auto parts store and the hardware store. Bear with me as I no
longer have the 5kt- so I don't have the exact dimensions.
Use ABS plastic pipe 90 degree elbow of about the OD as the ID of the airbox
when you remove the snorkel (broken on my car) Attach, using plastic cement,
a segment of pipe of appropriate length. What is appropriate? Depends on
where you want to draw air. I cut it off long and used a sizable hose clamp
to attach a length of flex plastic hose (used for carb air intake- available
at Pep Boys in a size which fit almost perfectly). This resembles dryer
exhaust hose- though the proper size is more often found at auto stores.
Where do you want to run this? On mine I had the turn signals removed from
the bumper, so I routed the hose to that opening. (The signals were
relocated to the city light sockets in the DOT turbo headlights.) Cover with
a fine mesh to prevent stones/insects entering the intake, all done. $10
cool semi-ram air.

Before I get the warnings of hydrolock: This setup was designed for the
Sonoran Desert, for a car which only I drove. It therefore was no difficulty
for me, on the few rainy days, to reach underhood and pull the hose off the
airbox. Whereupon it would ingest turbo-heated air, just like before the
mod.
By all means, you could refine this piece for use in whatever ambient
precipitation level you encounter. This is the desert max-intake variety...

Rob
