European Car had a 'Project 924' that spanned several issues.  May be of 
help to you if you haven't seen already.  They tried a lot of performance 
mods.  Don't know exact vol or issue.

Second that, VW 16V would be a good choice.  The 16V Scirocco, which weighs 
about the same as the early 924, was actually tested (Road&Track?) and found 
to be faster than the base 147hp 944.

But don't want to kybosh your I-5 aspirations.  MC in a 2100 lb car would be 
awesome.  Good luck.
