re: bearing noise up front, '91 200q20v

Need some help. My '91 200q20v has been making a "worn bearing' noise,
apparently from up front, for about 8 months. Tried standard diagnostics to
figure out which wheel bearing had gone; couldn't really tell; perhaps right
front. Doesn't sound like a cv joint, and they all appear tight.
Replaced right front wheel bearing; no change in noise. So, replaced the
other (they're at 118k miles, so don't feel bad about doing them anyways).
Again, still the same noise. Also have some tire noise, but I'll swap
tires/rims with someone and see what that does to the noise; this is too loud
for just that, and swapping tires front to rear didn't help.
Noise is most noticeable at lower speeds, say 20mph, and is somewhat
rhythmic. More pronounced upon braking, but always present (seems like
weight transfer makes it worse).

Also replaced the cv joints on the center driveshaft, and checked the center
support bearing, no change to the noise. I'm thinking that one of the output
bearings in the tranny, either left or right, is bad, and making the noise.
Anyone seen these bearings go bad? The family album lists them out as with
part numbers, size, et. al, and it looks like something that could be done
with the tranny in the car....
thanks for any advice.
