Family photos suggest that the 2.5 litre engine comes in turbo diesel as
well but that 2.6 litre becomes a V6.

No mention of a 2.6 I5.  Are you sure of the displacement?

Here in South Africa they market a VW Microbus with a 2.6 l 5cyl non-turbo
engine - not sure on bore/stroke can find out if you want?
