RE: Spider bite
Sounds like your suspension is in need of some refreshing! Some adjusting of
the tire pressures is also an idea. I was teaing up some gravel roads in the
summer and had a similar experience on a chicane. Wanted to go back and try
it again (a few times) but I hate backtracking, particularly when there are
farmers around!
You're also not dealing in the same power to weight ratio and outright power
league. The type 44 is a sedan after all, not a coupe nor an RS2!
I still love mine... I'm sure you'll grow to love yours! Have fun!

At the risk of re-opening an old (but inconclusive?) debate, I've been
starting to push my Type 44 around corners. I tried the party trick
yesterday evening, but got the apexes completely wrong. So I had
another go today, albeit in the wet.
I _think_ I've got close to the U-O-U effect described. I went right to
the limit on a long right-hander and tried the throttle steering trick
I use on the Type 85 Torsen. The car's reaction was weird - it was a
kind of soft wallow between U-O-U that really felt is if there was no
set direction to the behaviour. I had to lift and then brake because
of other traffic, but it was an interesting (and new) experience.
