Testing ABS sensors?

I've tried the simple stuff while trying to track down an ABS problem. I now 
suspect a bad sensor or sensor cable. I've tried hooking up a test meter but 
get inconsistent readings taken from the female socket on each sensor while 
the car is moving. In addition, I'm no test meter expert. The meter is "self 
ranging" and set at DC it seems to want to read in mV.
1) is there a correct voltage range the sensors should be emitting?
2) should I just be testing for continuity?
