You're right ... for a production piece, it's not too bad.

For a start, it will require some modifications to fit the car -- as would a 
custom IC -- but it's not very large and per two friends who are running 
StarQuests, it tends to heat-soak very quickly.  Around here, they also sell 
for $150-200 and if you're going to spend that much (and then pay more to 
have the outlets modified), then you're half-way to a custom IC and that 
seems a much better choice.

Lastly, you might find the following URL interesting:
