2322 code on MC

I decided to pull the codes on my 87 5KTQ today and it came up with a 2322 which according to the bently is a bad RPM sensor. I checked the sensor and it is infact bad. I have no idea how long the car has been like this but it _seems_to be running just fine. what does this thing do?? any idea on what a new one costs (it was too late to call any parts places) I am headed up to Watkins Glen next week for the club event so I guess I should take care of it before that??
