I think all of the US-based tuners use the same technique - provide
accurate information to the ECU and then adapt to it. It's pretty
sound when the car is fitted with emission control hardware.
In the UK, where we don't have such hardware, the diode (and/or resistor)
division approach is standard in the turbo chipping world. In the Audi
sphere, we only see the backwash of the Ford Cosworth RSnnn activities,
all of which are done this way.
It has saddened me several times to discover that _serious_ money has
been paid by some of our members for 60c-worth of components that
actually damage the system. I've recently sent an ECU to Scott Mockry
for one of these bodges to be reversed. Again, some famous names
sometimes appear on these ECUs.
My overall opinion is - you can trust the Yanks, but watch the Germans
like a hawk.
