Re: Does Audi paint die?

Alexander;

    Audi had some clearcoat problems around '86 - '87. The clearcoat
appeared heavily scratched but was actually cracking down to the basecoat.
This happened to my Zermatt Silver '86 5ktq. The degradation progressed
until I could scrape the clearcoat off with my fingernails. (Un)fortunately,
the car was totalled before I had to repaint it. The horizontal surfaces
failed first and fastest, but the vertical surfaces were starting to go at
the end. I have heard of other Audis of the same vintage with this problem
and have also seen it on a '87 Oldsmobile.
