Take your pick:

1) To make it that more expensive to replace.
2) To give you more pieces to rust.
3) To make your car one of those "damm furrin' cars" at Midas.

Or, just because :).  I believe the center muffler functions more as as
resonator and the rear as a real muffler.   Many have replaced the center
stage with jnst a straight pipe without too much audible consequences.
