4KQ muffler
Fellow Audifans,
I recently installed a custom catback muffler system in my 4KQ that I am
pretty happy with. After my first attempt at a performance set up failed
(poor fit, resonant frequency "booming" at 3000 rpm, and then again at
4200 rpm on) I went back and tried again. I told them I wanted a "quiet"
performance system. The problem is, at performance exhaust shops, their
idea of quiet is usually totally different than your idea. (As evidenced
by how loud they talk, and how many times they say "What?" during the
course of a conversation). I was assured, however, that this new set up
would be a "quiet" one.
I ended up with a 2.5" aluminized pipe system, catback, with a glass
packed (straight through) resonator in place of the mid muffler, then an
Edelbrock stainless steel muffler for an aft muffler, ending in a custom
made polished stainless steel dual tip that fits the facory rear bumper
opening perfectly. The tips look exactly stock - except they are 2.5"
instead of the smaller factory ones. The sound is still a bit loud for
someone who needs Lexus quiet, but I am happy with it. The tone is low,
consistent throughout the rev range, and imparts just enough sound to
the inside to use you ear as a tach. Total cost was a bit heavy - $400 -
but this is the fourth exhaust I have put on this car in 9.5 years.
Hopefully it will be the last.
