exploding battery

i had a battery explode on my 82 chev wagon...it happened while starting and
was certainly quite a surprise. i put it down to poor maintenance on my
part. there was very little battery acid so i surmised that the very low
acid level had somehow caused an internal spark or overheating. i replaced
the battery and never had any further problem. i now know that a
'maintenance free' battery isn't maintenance free. i check my batteries
regularly nowadays.
