This is caused at the fan switch and is normal. The fan switch only has
ignition power going to it so if that power goes off even though the relay
has battery power there is nothing to switch the relay to give the fan power.
There is however an after run on certain cars. This is not controlled by
Coolant temperature but by the heat coming off the exhaust manifold.
Designed to keep engine compartment temperatures under 85-90 C this may take
a few seconds to come on. If it doesn't come on it maybe have been
disconnected as this ran a long long time after a hot summer drive and
sometimes concerned customers. The control unit is under the dash board and
the switch is just in front of the battery mounted to the cylinder head.
Personal preference to have it connected in the summer and disconnected in
winter. This will not work while ignition is on as this overrides the
function allowing the fan to run normally and keeping engine temperatures
normal also. Good test: On a decent temp day (above 75 F) let car sit at
idle or slightly over for about 15-20 minutes this keeps air from flowing
through engine compartment. After time period wait for rad fan to cycle and
shut off and come on again. Time the time it takes this to happen. As the
rad fan shuts off start counting and turn car off about 30 SEC before you get
to your time you just counted if rad fan comes on shut car off right away.
Your fan should run within 30 seconds of ignition being shut off. If not
start finding out why.
