I hear somewhere that its something to do with EC or German taxes on
recycling. The more of your
products that you recycle, the lower your taxes. All packaging has to be
able to be recycled. BMW were boasting a few years ago that 97% (I think) of
each BMW built could be recycled.

Note that if proposed EU regulations become law, by 2006 motor maufacturers
will be responsible for the scrapping/recycling of _all_ their products. So
in a few years when you've got a car that has just become uneconomic to
repair you phone the local agent and they have to dispose of it for you. But
guess who is going to end up paying for all this?

The marketing manager of Panasonic europe was interviewed earlier this week
and stated that if this proposed legislation was to be extended to other
products (ie the ones made by Panasonic) then they would not sell their
products - just lease them to customers.
