Sounds like either a fuel delivery problem or a vacuum leak problem.
Could be clogged fuel filter(s), weak electric fuel pump, intermittent
fuel pump relay, or air leak in the intake tract. Given that the
problem occurred suddenly, the fuel pump or relay is more likely,
or possibly a hose has slipped off or cracked open. Check all air
hoses including the big rubber boot that goes from the air flow
meter to the throttle body.

The definiteive manual for your car is the Bentley official service
manual for the 1984-87 4000S/CS/Q, Coupe/GT and Quattro Turbo. You can
buy it from a variety of sources, including Tha Parts Connection
( http://www.thepartsconnection.com ).
