Help!

I recently bought a 1984 4000s Quattro for my wife. Aside from the soon
fixed problems which had made it an unpassable bargain, it has run like
a top. That is until a few days ago. We had been driving around town
and parked normally in the driveway upon return. A few hours later, we
got back in the car and the problem began. When the key is turned, the
car starts right up. In less than a second however, it sputters and
dies. On re-trying, I was sometimes able to nurse it along for a few
seconds by lightly feathering the gas pedal, but a full press kills it
more quickly. It has the least amount of gas in the tank that it has
had since we got it (just under a quarter tank) so I figured there was
probably gunk in the tank and the fuel line or filter was clogged. I
changed the filter and checked the fuel line up to the injector pump,
and there is free flow. I was hoping that someone out there would have
a suggestion or two: my repair experience to date has mostly been along
the lines of windshields and dashboard electronics. Even a source or
site (hopefully free) of manual-type schematics or diagrams would help
out a lot, if anyone knows of any. Thanks.
