Throbbing Tranny

Hey folks!

I'm hoping to be the proud new owner of a proud old
Quattro -- an '88 90Q.  Can y'all diagnose if the car
has a transmission problem for me?

I noticed that when I hold the shift lever in a gear,
I can feel a gentle pulsing in the lever.  It doesn't
happen when the gearshift is sitting normally in a
gear, only when I'm pressing it harder into position. 
I noticed it during that little pause while you hold
onto the lever while releasing the clutch.  The
transmission behaves normally otherwise.

Is this a sign of a greater problem?  Or should I not
worry?
