Pilot bearing removal

A friend with a '91 200 20v had to remove the transmission to replace a noisy throw out bearing and while in there figured he should replace everything. well we get the puller for the pilot bearing and manage to remove the bearings but not the housing that they sit in which is very much stuck in place. pulling on the small lip that is sticking out only breaks off small pieces of the housing. Is there a trick to removing this? I am guessing that it was supposed to come out as one piece.
