I have almost exactly the same problem in my 85 5KS.   I did the quick fix 
until I get the time and ambition to deal with it properly.... If you pull 
off the thermoformed plastic cover just in front of the windshield under the 
hood, there is a cable attached to the left side of the blower motor housing 
as you are facing the front of the car... You can disconnect it from the 
housing and manually move the leverage assembly back so you get heat... You 
lose the climate control feature in the car, but it will definitely take care 
of those frosty mornings until you can get the thing fixed.
