5k steering and brake retrofit
Hello list,
I have just started driving my 1987 5kcstq after a successful conversion to
1983 steering rack, power steering pump, hoses, and vacuum brake booster. I am
now completely pentosin free, and happily running on $1.50 per quart automatic
transmission fluid.
The conversion was done due to a bad rack, bad pump, bad bomb, and
leaking hoses. The total cost of the conversion is listed below;
1. vacuum brake booster, vacuum lines, hydraulic lines, atf reservoir, and
core steering rack that I pulled myself $60 at u-pull it yard
2. Rebuilt steering rack $250 including tax.
3. 2 quarts atf, $1.50 per quart.
The brake assist after this conversion is fine, the ABS still works, no auto
check warning lights are on, and my Pentosin bill is gone forever.
After getting rid of the central hydraulic system as it was, I feel much
better about the hydraulic, and braking systems in this car.
Before you all start to flame me, remember that I have used all Audi OEM
parts from the same 5k series cars, and this is almost all a direct bolt in
conversion.
In the next week I will be posting a more complete procedure to do this
conversion.
The car is in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metro area if anyone would like to
take a peek under the hood.
Thanks
Brian Larson
1987 5kcstq 175k miles, 100% pentosin and bomb free
Also, all the leftover parts are available in the twin cities metro area for
free, I will not ship them however, sorry. This includes 3 bombs, 1 rack, 2
pumps, 2 master cylinders(at least 1 is good), etc....
