For the US market, the A8 was introduced for the 97 model year
with a regular auto transmission, and offered with either 3.7L
230hp 32V V8 and FWD or a 4.2L 300hp 32V V8 and quattro. For 1998
the auto trans became a Tiptronic. The steering wheel was changed
to a newer style for the 98 model, as was a change from the
"Delta CC" radio to the "Concert" radio. Otherwise the A8 is
largely unchanged up to the 99 model year. The big change is for
the 2000 model, with only the 4.2L engine with quattro being offered.
The new 4.2 is now a 40V unit with 310hp. The ASF body got some
unspecified additional bracing and there is a change to the
front end design (more upright grille, new headlights, large
air intake in the bumper cover). There are new style exterior door
handles and side marker lights too. The interior also got a number of
revisions, softer leather seats, wider armrests, revised center console
with new "Symphony" radio, new instrument cluster lighting, and
side curtain head airbags added.
