Popping Noise from A/C Compressor

    Started the car today and I noticed a popping noise.  Lifted the hood
and gave a listen.  A/C compressor was making some sort of popping noise,
racther loud.  Very strange, happened once before.  I ran the A/C which
caused the noise to drop in volume.  The noise went away after the engine
warmed.  A/C does NOT work and hasn't for a year.  When the A/C is turned on
it just cycles on and off over and over.  Anyone heard this popping before?
