cleaning up your lights
Hello Eyvind ,
Just to tell you it is possible to sand down you
headlights to get rid of those craters.
I took a 220 oxide grit standard disk size
attached to my drill and gently sanded down to remove material, you want to do
this smoothly as not to create too much heat while sanding on glass. then I
moved up to the next available grade, I think its something like 350 or so. You
could use the wet type at this point but I used the dry white oxide type. Then I
followed by the wet type, using 400 followed by 600 and finally 1000 grit
paper mounted on your disk. To finish it off I mounted a felt on the disk sander
and used some car rubbing compound, and they came out almost as new with a
barely noticeable light hase versus a brand new glass.
Important points to remember:
- Remove all, and I mean all scratches before moving
on to the next level of smoothness in grit.
- Use plenty of water, what I had was a running
garden hose dropping on the disk. You realise by now that I got wet doing this
job !! anyway if your keep the rpm of the drill slow it will not be too
bad
You could make yourself a little wooden jig to hold the
headlight securely while your doing this.
Hope it goes well, It certainly was well worth the effort
for me
