RE: Popping Noise from A/C Compressor - Cut the Belt?

Alex,
Whether you are using a belt or not at this moment will only make a
difference to your AC clutch bearing, since you are not engaging the
compressor. If you compressor is not being used it could freeze very easily,
it is highly recommended to use your compressor even during the winter to
get the lubrication going. The only way your compressor will get lubricated
is by using the compressor.
Take care,
Avi

Subject: Re: Popping Noise from A/C Compressor - Cut the Belt?

My A/C hasn't worked in a while, and I haven't chnaged the belt since I
bought the car. Needless to say the belt is very cracked, but makes no
noise. I am not going to fix the A/C until next summer, so could I cut the
belt now without causing damage the compressor?
Would the compressor freeze up during the winter? Anyone?

Thanks!
