    I second Huw's experience...BTDT.  On my GT when I did the change to the 
4kq downpipe and manifold, I had to cut the bung off my trany to clear the 
down pipe.  It will fit in there, and you will get everything bolted up just 
fine, but you will hear a nasty exhaust leak coming from the 
downpipe/manifold juction because the tranny bung is hitting the downpipe and 
not letting them fully seat...and we're talking thousandths of an inch 
clearance, "about the same dimensions" may not cut it here....
