This must be the 'gradual withering away of the state'.

Pardon the soapbox, but should there be any one on this list from the
People's Republic, doesn't this make you blush?

I recently saw a documentary where a resourceful PRC citizen was proudly
featured because he had saved for 6 months and had bought his first--washing
machine!

Modernization is impressive, but it will be even more impressive when Joe
(Jiang?) proletariat gets to own one.

Well, on second thought, this could be a good thing. In 10 years, the
repair bills are bound to take a few nukes offline.

Ok, I'm done, sorry.

Subject: Audi in China

I've found the following info on the web pages of one of the local car
magazines. Here's the translation...

Audi company started the production of it's A6 model in China. The car is
being manufactured in Changchun factory, which was built by joint venture
of First Automobile Works of China and Volkswagen corporation. 30000 A6s is
scheduled to be manufactured every year. The car differs slightly from it's
European version.
The main modifications apply to engine and transmission. The choice of
engines consists of 4 and 6 cylinder units: 1.8, 2.4 and 2.8 litre. The
floorpan was lenghtened by 90mm, resulting in increased room for rear seat
passengers. Transmission is either manual or automatic. The cars are
equipped with ABS, dual airbags, anti-theft system and installation for
cell phone.
So far the potential buyers are mainly state officials. There's already
about 100 thousand A6s running on Chinese roads, but these are cars built
in Europe.
