Your engine is the venerable 2.8 V6 12-valve used in not just your
model year A6 but all 96-97 A4 2.8, 1995-97 A6, 1992-94 100,
1993-95 90 and all US Cabriolet cars.  If there is a real design
issue with this engine we would hear much more about it on this list,
and most people on this list are certainly not ignorant about their cars.
It's more likely some external factor that causes some engines to
experience the problem but not others.  What is it?  I have no clue.
