Summit Point recap
I'm happy to say that the PCR-QCUSA Summit Point Driver Safety School was a
success. The 52+ attendees & instructors made this event really wonderful.
We were treated to great weather, two dry, clear and crisp days bracketed by
rain before and after the event. The track -- recently resurfaced and VERY
sticky -- was nice and dry both days.
We started with tech at a local motel -- if it could be called that! -- on
sunday and got about 35 people done. A number of us headed out to an Outback
Steakhouse or some other local eateries for dinner that night. Thanks to
Geza Bujtas, Jim Jensen, Darrell Morgan and anyone else who helped me with
tech on Sunday.
Monday was an early (7 am) morning that was delayed when the gate was opened
late. But we had our driver meeting, got on track, held exercises and
classes for the novices, and got the Instructors and Intermediates on the
track. Thanks to Craig Liechty for acting as head instructor and teaching
the classes.
After a cheap lunch (almost EVERYTHING in West Virginia is cheap) we got 10
clean, fast and uneventful sessions in (5 classes, 2 runs each) and headed
to the dinner. The dinner, sponsored by Valley Motors, turned out great.
After a half-hour for drinks, we settled in for dinner, and held a raffle of
goods donated by event sponsors:LL Tek, Heishman's Audi, Valley Motors,
Autothority, and QCUSA. Almost everyone went home with some sort of prize.
On Tuesday, the weather was colder and cloudy. We handed out the t-shirts
(another GREAT design by Thompson Smith) and hit the track. The whole day
went very well, with only three off-course excursions of note. On driver hit
the track with cold tires, first run of the day and slid on turn 3 ito the
gravel. Another driver, in the afternoon, carried too much speed into the
first turn and went into the gravel. A third driver, on the next to last
session of the day, 1/4 rolled his TTq. No, it wasn't due to a HALDEX spider
problem(!), but instead he went into turn 10 too hot, got sideways and hit
the gravel. The car's left wheels dug in to the gravel, and the car flipped
onto the left door. A little dent to the door and a similar one to his pride
were the only damages.
Thanks to our instructors:Ken Walkosak, Tony Zelones, Charlie Day, Brian
Cates, Jim Baur, Craig Liechty, Charlie Lippman, Alan Himes, Kim McCracken,
Nick Pinto, Mike Sokalasky, Fernando Silva Pinto and anyone else I may have
overlooked. You guys made this event possible.
Thanks also to everyone who attended. Without you all paying we wouldn't
have had the event in the first place.
Tenative plans are for us to run on October 1-2 in 2000. We may run the
short track on a Sunday, and the big track on Monday, or have the short and
big track on Monday, and the big track on Tuesday. We really hope people
save some time for the first weekend of October, 2000.
If you are interested in being on a mailing list for the event, please
contact me.
Thanks again everyone!
