If it is clicking, it is done.  Time for new one.  

If the boots are cut or torn they should be replaced asap to prevent
grit/sand/rocks/boulders from getting in there and ruining the joint
itself.  that's how far gone they can be - boot damage only, no noise at
full lock each way turning.
