How not to do a V8Q timing belt
After many posts and responses, I have my V8q back on the road.
If you want to have REAL fun, don't use any special tools. Just hold the
flywheel with a big screwdriver to get the harmonic balancer off. This will
break the Crankshaft Position Sensor pin and you will have to pull the
transmission to replace it. This is only after you have spent about a
million hours wondering if the belt is on wrong first, as you have no way of
holding the cams. It can turn a 6 to 10 hour job in to one that takes weeks.
After all. what is more fun than tinkering with an Audi?
Many thanks to all listers for the help and especially "Cobram" for some
pictures of the flywheel to assure me the pin had broken.
If you do this job yourself, RENT, BORROW, STEAL or BUY the tools! Blau has
tools for rent. You must have a good way to hold the harmonic balancer and a
good way to hold and position cams. Also, make sure you have the Bentley.
The Bentley is only available on fiche, but if you are attempting this, I
may know of a source for Xerox copies of the timing belt procedure. .' )
The job with the right stuff isn't terrible, just slow and a bit of knuckle
scraping.
