Ti,
The defrost button on the climate control panel indicates the analog CC
system. It was used on '84 to early '86 5Ks. Later models got the digital
CC system which no longer controls the defroster. On those cars (like my
'87 5KT) the defroster is simply activated by a mechanical on/off switch.
The flush doorhandle models received a slightly improved version of this
system.
