2.2L 5 vacuum system Questions

Hello,

I have a Coupe GT with the 2.2L 5 and I'm a bit confused about my vacuum. 
It's a 2 source system in my 86' with a line going from the intake that t's 
with the pump. So, technically I could remove the pump and still have 
boosted brakes right? If not I think i'm going to put an electric pump on it 
anyways because I believe my pump is on its way to the land down under.

Something under the hood has been knocking intermittently and it doesn't 
make sense for it to be anything else other than the pump. I've heard horror 
stories of the seals failing inside the pump and having it knock. Anybody 
have any other idea's?
