re Window/Mirror Lights

"Jonathan Jagolta" <jjagolta@erols.com> asked:

I have a '88 90q and several of the lights for the windows and the mirrors
located on the driver's door are out. Can anyone help and tell me how to
remove the panel to get at the bulbs underneath?

You have to remove the screw holding in the bottom of the handle, remove,
remove two screws holding the upper part to the door frame. Then pry up the
rear a tad, push down in the middle at the bend, and slide a plastic squeege
up along the edge to the front of the assy. The goal is to free two
protrusions at the front of the plastic from the door. Once that is
accomplished, pull the whole assy up trying to get it past the door leather.
Note that this only gets you to the switch assemblies. They have to be
disassembled, a time-consuming task requiring shim stock, tiny screwdrivers,
and patience. You will need a Radio Shack tiny LED to replace the light as
well as a 1/4 watt 1 kilohm resistor. This stuff is documented in the QFOM.

Also my dash clock light does not work. Can I get to the bulb for this by
removing the shelf under the dash?

In my experience, only a couple of the dash illumination lights can be
reached from below. Very briefly, you need to pull the horn cover (just an
inch!), disconnect, remove nut on steering, mark steering wheel, pull wheel.
Find hole in mid bottom of turn-switch assy and use phillips screwdriver at
an angle to loosen assy. Pull back a scosh. Remove two screws at bottom of
dash. Pull it out some and disconnect 3 or 4 connectors (pull up central
saddle bit). Take the dash inside and swap bulbs. (You did get them
first?)

Assembly is reverse of disassembly. Be sure to put a dab of Glyptol or
Lacquer (fingernail polish might work) onto the steering wheel nut after
torqing it to spec. (35 ft-lbs?)

You need a Bentley manual for this car!
