I had two cars that had to go through the recall.  Both exhibited the same 
symptoms.  The fix, according to local dealer was that there was a known 
problem with the retrofit which would cause the airbag light to come on for a 
few seconds, then go out.  I don't remember if you said the light came on and 
stayed on, or if it went out after a bit.  

Anyway, the "known" fix was to replace the warning light - they claimed there 
was a resistance problem as the bulbs aged.  Sounded a bit fishy to me, 
replacing the bulbs worked in both cases.  At least I think it worked.  The 
lights still come on during initial test, and go out with the rest.

As for failing at 10 years, if so, that's the one failure that I've not 
encountered.
