Just had that fixed on my car. According to my mechanic, the plastic "ball"
that the
shift lever fits in, is the problem. Unscrew your console and lift it up to
see the
shift lever. If plastic ball that it pivots in is cracked, then there's
your problem.
As you shift, that crack opens up and causes everything to be sloppy.

The part is about $50 (dealer list) and it looks easy to fix. The new
plastic ball comes in a metal
plate and you just un-bolt the old one (from inside the car) and bolt in
the new one.

The Bentley manual has the procedure for aligning the plate. If you need
that info., let me know.
