You got it half right. The AWD on the Quantum Syncro is not a VC
system. It is identical to the 4Kq. The rear suspension is different
between the 4Kq and the Quantum Syncro, but the two cars are otherwise
(mechanically) virtually the same.
The Syncro system that is found on some VW Golf models, on the other hand,
is VC based.
As such, "Syncro" does not refer to a particular design. It is simply
VW's nomenclature for their AWD models. The design varies from model
to model. Incidentally, the same now applies to Audi's "quattro". It
no longer imply a particular design either, witness the new A3q/S3q/TTq
models and their use of Haldex.

Nope. The 5K non-turbo quattros, UrQ and 4Kq all use type 016 as well.
There are variations in gear ratio and ancillaries.
