... I've seen a few good responses ... but IME, there is one thing I'd
recommend that you check first of all ... especially if you had clutch work
done or anything else that might have required disconnecting the linkage.
The "gearshift lever" attaches to the tranny selector rod in a way where it
is only held in place by a bolt that works a lot like a big set screw. I
had a situation on the urQ where the gears slowly went away ... and what I
found was that this set screw had loosened and was backing out. 10mm wrench
and a little twist and we're back on the road. As others have pointed out,
there is also a chance that the "gearshift lever" at the transmission is
loose, or one of the plastic parts of the linkage have gone out. It seems
to me that I was able to buy replacement sockets for the "connecting rod
separately, but a check on TFA doesn't reveal a P/N. Here are the P/Ns I
found for parts that might need to be replaced ...

Gearshift lever 857 711 181 B (from shift linkage to tranny selector rod)
Connecting Rod 431 711 429 B (locating rod from shift linkage to top of
tranny housing)
Ball socket 431 711 221 (at end of linkage where gearshift lever
attaches)
Ball socket 823 711 643 A (the one under the shift boot)
Shifter stop 431 711 133 C
Shifter stop 431 711 133 D

The last two parts are in the shifter inside the car, and buffer the left
and right stops of the shift mechanisms. I have yet to replace these on any
of my "q's" but I have seen them fail. I have never ever had to change one
of the ball sockets under the boot either. IMO/E the connecting rod is the
most likely faulty part, followed by the gearshift lever.

HTH!
