Just had it done. They check CO and NOX at 30 and 55-60mph.  Total
emissions portion takes 5-10 minutes.  Watch the screen and you can see
where your car's emmissions output is vs. the allowable "envelope".   My
89 100 easily passed even with a gutted kitty.
BTW, like to worry.  Seems if they don't lash your car up right, it'll
take off.  My mech told me it happened upstate when they first req'd the
new test.  Monkey Lad (tm) forgot to tighten up one of the straps. 
Ouch.
