RE: UR-Q Timing belt BROKE (was: '85 UR-Q Won't Start)
David, I had the same problem in my 86 5kt.
The water pump failed which caused the timing belt to slip.
The MC motor in my car is an interference motor. I would assume your UR
turbo motor falls in the same category.
This means the valves contact the pistons and bend when the timing belt
breaks. Your piston tops are probably nicked, hopefully not cracked. I
just took some emory paper to mine to remove the rough edges. Turbo motors
don't like hot spots, so the pistons do need to be smoothed.
I actually bought my car in this condition, greatly lowered the purchase
price:)
I cheaped out on my repair. Just pulled the head and changed out the valves
with some VW quantum valves I had laying around. The VW valves are not
sodium filled, but I have had no adverse affects. Car has seen several
200-300 miles trips @80-100mph, everything is still holding up. I would
have to advise buying sodium valves for all but the biggest cheapskates(like
me).
The entire repair job cost me $35 for a new head gasket and $5 for a valve
cover gasket.
Oh yeah - and $2500 worth of my time:)
