Seems I remember that this was a roundabout way of introducing a 5 speed.
It was billed as a 4 speed with overdrive, so it was a 4 & E(conomy) gear.

Got to keep a net over those marketing types, eh?   That goes right
along with the under the bumper chin spoilers - on the REAR of the car
for crying out loud.  On the front, it creates a slight downward pressure
on the front by causing more air to flow *over* the car instead of under
it.  On my '78 Diesel VW, the chin spoiler was supposed to be worth
maybe an additional 2 mpg.  Under the back bumper as installed by
GM and other such, it's got to just be decoration.
