RE: Performance Camshafts??
>Hi all,
I've been lurking on the list for about a month now--since the
purchase of a 1990 90Q20V--and decided it was time to ask for advice
from the people who would know best :~) I'm interested in upping
the HP
output of my 20V, but I seem to be having a hard time finding out
about
aftermarket cams for this engine. Schrick makes a 260 and Piper
also
reportedly makes a performance cam, but can't find any specs on it.
The
person at Blau informed me that I should see about a 20-30% increase
from mid to high range from the Schrick cam, seems extremely
optimistic
to me. Anyone have any advice/personal experience they would like
to
comment on?
I saw the post on the 200 20V Turbo engine for sale as a
transplant.
Any comments on the engine swap? Thanks in advance.

Over on the 20V list there is often discussions regarding cams for the 90
20v sedan and coupe 20v. I've asked a few times with generally vague but
less optimistic numbers then Blau gave you. To guess, a set of cams, an
after-market exhaust and a cone filter might give you 20% towards the higher
end. Risking destruction raising the rev limiter to 7200 and increased
fueling would probably help the cams too.
We also did some research on blower kits but they generally don't exist and
the two companies that offered to do one up jobs estimate it to cost $4000.
I even went as far as looking into an electric blower because it offered
better mounting flexibility over belt driven blowers. They can be done but
we either pay $4k for a one up or do the R&D ourselves. I'm game for the
latter but until I've got my urq up and running I'm dependent on my 90q20v.
A couple guys have/are doing the 20vt transplant into coupes. I like this
idea but the cost is $8-12K. You'd have to really love your 90q20v. If I had
the time, facility and cash I'd opt for this. I cannot think of a better way
to make the 90q20v the perfect car.
Finally, and in all likelihood the path I will pursue is displacement. I
think a 2.6L with cams, intake and exhaust upgrades, rev limiter raise to
7200, cam timing gear (to move that torque into a useful place) and perhaps
a slightly raise compression ratio is the way to go. I don't know what HP
this would make but there would be improved torque from the displacement. I
don't know maybe 200hp?
Unfortunately for me, I have the more pressing need to convince my wife
that a new, oversized garage with shop space is more important then a new,
improved kitchen. The debate has been going on for a year!
