cambelt and lifters the final chapter

Hi all

First of all I would like thank Huw, Steve, Phil, Jim, Ed, Sachelle and all
others who have helped me with getting this problem resolved.

1. timing was sorted by going back to basics and setting the rotor arm on
the TDC mark, and the mark being lined up in the bellhousing and back of cam
sprocket. Car started with no problem. Simple of matter of timing it
correctly with my timing light. Car now feels like it's got a few more
horses being set at what Audi intended with no pre ignition issues to
contend with.

2. The loud tapping/knocking has gone so far, despite my best efforts to
replicate it with some spirited driving. I am now left with what can be
described as mild tappet noise, better than before ( it always did rattle a
bit). So the lifters seemed to cure the problem, although I rather think
that there is some wear in the head due to the previous owners deferred
maintenance policy. Maybe next year for a funky head to really make it rock.

Once again the list saves me a small fortune in labour costs, thanks again.
