RE: JE Pistons finally arrive :-)
Marc -
Thanks for the information on the J&E pistons. For rough comparison
purposes, do you have any idea what the weight of the OEM pistons were, as
compared to the J&E's 380 grams? I know were probably talking different
sizes, 81mm vs the J&E's 82mm but... that should be close enough for guess
work on the effects of the changes.
I'm assuming the J&E's are definitely forged as opposed to the Audi Stock
pistons (my guess) cast? In addition to strength, I thought another reason
to go with forged was supposed to be their lighter weight? Any idea if you
original pistons were cast or forged?
Finally, does J&E give you a cylinder tolerance to bore to, or is that
something your machine shop decides for you?
Thanks
Mike P.

The pistons are for an 82mm bore. Each piston weighs 380 grams. I also
got lightened pins at the same time, but I don't remember the exact weight
of those. Some other miscelaneous bits of info:
Top Ring: 1.5mm
2nd Ring: 1.5mm
Oil Ring: 4.0mm
Pin Dia: .866in
Pin Length: 2.500in
Wire Locks: .063in
Inv. Dome depth: .475in
The cost breakdown is as follows:
Ea. Total
Wire Lock Chrome Si. 1.50 15.00
JE Premium Pin 22.50 112.50
Ring Set(Total Seal) 94.93 94.93
Pin Fitting 4.75 23.75
Pistons 100.00 500.00
------
Total 746.18
+shipping 10.27 10.27
------
Grand Total: 756.45
If it is any help, the Job # of this was 193763. They should be able to
pull up the specs from that number...
