Removing leather seat covers from 1987 5000CSTQ front seats...

I'm trying to get the cover off the passenger seat back on my '87 
5KCSTQ. I've got the seat out of the car, and in the living room. The 
back is removed from the base, and I've removed the trim, bent back 
the retaining hooks, removed the clips, removed the u shaped clips 
that hold the headrest on, and removed the headrest.

The problem: The plastic sockets that the headrests go into won't 
come out. It looks like I should be able to squeeze the end of them 
together, and push them out, however, they won't go. Any tips or 
tricks to doing this? I know I could cut the retaining tabs off, and 
they'd probably slide right out, but I'd rather not ruin them and 
have to buy new ones.
