RE: all this talk of ICs has me thinking....

For those who were at Mt. Washington this year, and happened to be looking
at the underside of cars, that is exactly how the intercooler is on my
Callaway. Albeit, it is smaller than in the image in the link Mark
provided. But it is located in the lower right corner of the car(below and
in front of the airbox, behind the lower valence and skirt), with the
airflow gathered by a scoop and passing up through it.

The biggest problem I would one have to watch out for would be the pressure
drop across such a large intercooler, and the size of turbo required to keep
pushing enough air through it.

I picked up a copy of Corky Bell's book on turbocharging, and in the book
there is a picture of an intercooler mounted UNDER the engine lengthwise
across the engine bay. The thought here is that you could mount a truly
HUGE intercooler in this space (I took a quick look under the 4k, and this
appears to be feasable with some clever bracketry). Naturaly, it is best
to weld some sort of an air scoop to the bottom of the IC to provide
enough air flow, but I would think that the slightly reduced airflow from
this mounting configuration would be gained in sheer square footage? Any
of the physics pros out there on the list care to comment?
