transaxle flange oil seal seating problems
Many thanks to those who answered my previous questions about the
016 quattro tranny. All advice was put to good use and I was exited
about
getting the thing back into the car.
I had the tranny on the jack and ready to roll underneath but the
whole show came to an abrupt halt when I saw my $10.00/qt gear lube
pooling up on the driveway. Sick feeling. I undid the left side drive
flange (with new seal) and noticed the seal wasn't seated flat. No
problem I thought, I'll just give it a few more whacks. I did that and
then turned the input shaft for fun and watched the speed sensor gearing
lift the seal back up again. So that's what Bently meant about using a
sleeve to drive the seal in.
I read the insructions again and in fact it says the right side
needs to be driven with a sleeve and the left side should be fully
seated. Is this a mistake?
Does anyone know how far the left side seal should be driven in, or
does someone have the special tool that they can measure up. I'm sure I
can make some facimile out of wood or fiberboard.
Anyway, I have a few days to wait again while I express order
another new seal. Any help will again be greatly appreciated.
