RE: 4kq Timing Mark???
Two items, addressed in order.
1) Timing Mark. Gets pretty hard to find with 15 years of crud
ont he flywheel. Best way to find it is to find TDC on engine. Put car
in 5th and roll or in Neutral and turn crank with 27mm socket on front of
crank pulley. You can also look in the little window at the Back side of
the Cam Pulley ont he driver side just above the Valve Cover. There is a
little indent.Dot that is visible. SHould line up witht he top of the
Valve cover. Or, if this doesnt work, do it the old fashioned
way. Pull Cyl #1 Spark Plug. Look in hole and move till Cyl is at top of
stroke. you can (CAREFULLY) use a long phillips screwdriver oror pencil
etc to get the exact TDC. I use a screwdriver since I cant drop it inside
and it wont gbreak off. Just wait till its close to the top to do this so
you dont hit a valve or something with it. ANd remember, there are TWO
times the cyl reaches reaches the Top. Find one then search for the
timing marks. Use a bright light and a wire brush to cleanit up. If its
not there, go one ful crank revolution and look agina. you'll find
it. Then once you find it, clean it up and put a dab of silver or white
paint or nailpolish ion it. That makes it easy to time as its reflective.
2) Compression. 110 is REALLY low. Thats more like what a ur-q
would have with 7.0:1 compression. Are you sure you ran the engine first
to get the oil circulating and the rings seated up??? Also, make sure
you crank for at least 10 seconds to give the gauge time to make sure its
all the way up. And Spark plugs out of all cyl's. My Girl Friends 4kq
gets about 160-165 on all 5, with 170,000 miles. My 84' 4kq got about
145-150 on all 5. My Kh motor seems to be abnormally high. I'me getting
180 exactly o all 5. Yikes. I guess when the decked the head they raised
it a little more than I thought. Oh wlel, runs strong. Little worried
about knowck onee i turn up the boost but I'll jsut have to be carreful.
If you really have 110, you probably need a head job. Thats more
likely than rings on the Audi 5-cyl. Cheaper too. :-)
burnign oil or anything???
